STRATEGIC LOCATION OF THE PROVINCE




OVERVIEW

Historic Bataan is strategically located in the middle of the country’s growth triad of Subic Bay Freeport Zone, Clark Special Economic Zone and Metro Manila.

The province proudly offers its pristine shoreline and white sandy beaches to local and foreign tourists. Much more of its forest reserves ideal for mountaineering and eco-tourism activities.

Bataan plays host to several economic zones and industrial estates namely: the PNOC Alternative Fuels Corporation Industrial Park, PEZA-Bataan Economic Zone, Plastic City Special Economic Zone, Bataan Technological Park, Inc., Hermosa Special Economic Zone, Subic-Hermosa Cyber City, and Hermosa Ecozone Industrial Park.

Aptly referred as the industrial heartland of Central Luzon, Bataan serves as home to some of the most strategic anchor industries and institution in the Corridor. These include: Petron Bataan Refinery, TOTAL Petroleum, Liquigaz, UniOil, ORICA Explosives, Bataan 2020, ATI Grains Terminal, Diversified Plastic Film Systems, Inc., Philippine Resins Industries, Inc., NPC Alliance Corporation (formerly Bataan Polyethylene Corporation), Phoenix Polypropylene Plant (formerly Petrocorp), and the Maritime Academy of Asia and the Pacific (MAAP), the most modern maritime academy in the Philippines.

a. Geographic

Bataan Peninsula is lying in the southwestern part of Central Luzon. Eleven out of twelve municipalities are along the coastlines of Manila Bay in the east and China Sea in the southwestern part.

The City of Balanga is the capital where the center of trade and commerce of the province is located.

Bataan has a total land area of 137,296 hectares, representing 7.5% of Region 3 and 0.5% of the whole archipelago. It has two (2) political districts each with six (6) municipalities comprising of 237 barangays.

It has two (2) distinct seasons: the rainy and dry season. The rainy season starts on May and ends up to the early part of November. The rest of the year is mostly dry with some occasional rains province-wide. An average of six (6) typhoons makes it to the guest book of the province every year. Bataan’s terrain varies from rugged slopes to hilly lands and plains.

b. Demographic

Bataan has a 2008 projected population of 694,332, with 143,364 households and an annual growth rate of 2.74%. Literacy rate is 98% (2003), Labor force participation rate is 66% (April 2003), and an employment rate of 84.9% (April 2003).

Major dialects spoken are Tagalog, Pampango, Ilocano, Cebuano, Bikolano, and Waray. Dominant religion is Roman Catholic, followed by Iglesia ni Cristo and Aglipay.

About 77% of families get their income from the wages and salaries sector while 23% comes from agricultural activities. Other sources come mostly from Overseas Filipino Workers.
